You do not need to know the Twelve Steps, speak in front of the room or be certain that AA is for you before attending a first meeting. Check whether the meeting is open or closed, arrive a few minutes early and tell one person it is your first time if that feels comfortable.
What usually happens
AA meetings vary because each group decides its own format. A chairperson may open with a short reading, invite members to share on a topic and close with a moment of silence or prayer. Some meetings focus on a speaker, a Step or a reading from AA literature.
You may be invited to introduce yourself. AA’s own guidance says this is not mandatory. You can listen without sharing.
Open and closed meetings
An open AA meeting can be attended by anyone interested in the programme, including a family member or observer. A closed meeting is for AA members or people who have a desire to stop drinking.
If you are unsure whether a listing is suitable, contact the group or choose an open meeting.
A simple first-meeting plan
- Recheck the time and location on the day; Bali venues can change.
- Arrive 10 minutes early so you are not searching for the room after the meeting begins.
- Say, “This is my first meeting,” to the chair or greeter if you want help settling in.
- Listen for similarities rather than trying to decide whether every story matches yours.
- Stay for a short conversation afterwards if you feel comfortable.
- Try more than one meeting before deciding whether AA is useful to you.
There is no attendance fee. Groups may pass a basket for voluntary contributions.
Privacy and affiliation
Anonymity is a central AA principle, but a public venue is still a public place. Share only what you choose. Bali Recovery is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous and does not speak for any group.
If a meeting is not enough today
A meeting is peer support, not medical care. If you may be at risk from alcohol withdrawal, do not rely on a meeting to manage it. Seek a medical assessment. If there is immediate danger, severe symptoms or risk of harm, contact emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.
